MOON ROCK

The Baily is a special edition Moonphase with a dial made from natural aventurine. Most of the aventurine seen in watchmaking is simply glass flecked with copper filings, but this is a natural semi-precious gemstone that has been painstakingly cut and polished into a dial that is just 1mm thick. The finished product has a distinctive speckle-patterned look and a smooth glossy surface unique to each watch.

As with our other Moonphase models, the Baily features applied hour markers made using Lumicast, a blend of ceramic and Grade OL X1 Super-LumiNova. These are paired with a flawlessly polished lance handset and a seconds hand with the Farer “A” in white.

The Moonphase disc is carefully handpainted in Switzerland and finished with yellow moons made from applied Super-LumiNova that has been textured by hand to mimic the lunar surface.

Only 200 units of the Baily will be produced in total, with 100 units available in the first batch.

Please note that due to Aventurine being a naturally mined stone, the dial will be unique to each watch and may differ from the pictures shown.

Features

The dial of the Baily is made from a piece of natural green aventurine, a semi-precious gemstone that is mined, cut and polished into a unique dial that is just one millimetre thick.

Lunar Orbit - Each moonphase disc is hand-painted in Geneva, Switzerland and features a textured moon set against a starry sky. What’s more, the moons themselves are painted using Super-LumiNova so that they glow brightly in the dark.

Curvaceous Comfort - The cushion case sits comfortably on any wrist, with a thickness of only 10.5mm and a compact lug-to-lug of 43.8mm.

Manual Drive - The watches in the Moonphase collection are powered by Swiss hand-wound mechanical movements with custom decoration, which can be viewed through a sapphire case back.

STORY

The Baily is named after English astronomer Francis Baily (28ᵗͪʰ April 1774 – 30ᵗͪʰ August 1844). He is best known for his observations of "Baily's beads" during a total eclipse of the Sun, which was named after him in honour of his vivid and detailed description of the phenomena. Baily’s Beads occur when the Moon covers the Sun during a solar eclipse and the rugged lunar surface allows light to shine through in some places but not others, creating a beading effect around the edge of the Moon.

In addition, Baily was one of the founders of the Royal Astronomical Society and held the post of president four times. He is tied for the most times a person has been elected to the position and is the longest-serving President, having held the office for 8 years.

Baily also has a lunar crater named after him, as well as Baily's metal, the rigid and thermally insensitive alloy used to cast the 1855 standard yard (16 parts copper, 2.5 parts tin, 1 part zinc).

The Farer design team definitely aced their exams in school because these watches just have amazing proportions and great colours, and always bring something new to the table.→

When I find out one of the most design-conscious British brands is tackling this most traditional complication, my curiosity is piqued.→

The Moonphase collection features a big personality within a trim 38.5mm case that’s not shy on details itself, but the star of the show is undoubtedly the enormous moon depicted within the aperture that dominates the top half of the dial.→
