ELECTRIC ELEMENTS

The Marsden is striking in its simplicity. The dial is a brilliant pure white, with a glossy mirror-polished surface. Onto this crisp backdrop are set polished numerals, a mix of numerals and angled batons in a vivid electric blue. These are paired with an alpha handset in a matching electric blue mirror polish, whilst the seconds hand has a Farer ‘A’ at its tip. These minimalist hands and markers offer excellent legibility and can appear in a multitude of blue shades, depending on how the light catches them. These elements give the Marsden a clean, contemporary aesthetic that makes it an exceptionally versatile watch.

FEATURES

Metallic Markers - The hands and markers of the Marsden are polished and are a vivid electric blue in colour that transforms into a wide range of shades depending on how the light catches them.

Curvaceous Comfort - The cushion case sits comfortably on any wrist, with a thickness of only 10.5mm and a compact lug-to-lug of 43.8mm.

Manual Drive - The watches in the 35mm Cushion Case collection are powered by Swiss hand-wound mechanical movements with custom decoration, which can be viewed through a sapphire case back.

STORY

The Marsden is named after Kate Marsden. Born in London in 1859, she became a nurse at the age of 16 and spent the next few years working in various countries. She began to take an interest in treating leprosy, and in 1890, Marsden left England to travel to Siberia, somewhat naively in search of a mythical herb rumoured to cure the disease. Her work was supported by both Queen Victoria and the Russian Tsarina, and she travelled over 11,000 miles across Russia, treating many sick, poor and exiled people she encountered. In 1895, she founded the St Francis Leprosy Guild, a charity that is still active today, and in 1897, she opened a leper hospital in Vilyuysk. Sadly, several of her contemporaries found her exploits unbelievable and chose to try to discredit her work, probably due to her sex and her possible homosexuality. She died in relative obscurity in London in 1931, though in more recent times, her legacy has received the recognition it deserves. She is remembered fondly in Siberia, and in 1991, a 55-carat diamond that was found in Yakutia was named the Sister of Mercy Kate Marsden.
