This special edition of the Palmer GMT replaces the Western Arabic numerals seen on the original model with their Eastern Arabic counterparts. This can be seen across all elements of the dial, from the 24-hour scale to the minute track and the date window.
The Palmer is an almost minimalist addition to Farer's best-selling GMT collection. With its pearlescent opaline dial, the Palmer has a useful GMT function for tracking a second time zone and a high-contrast dial that's easy to read. The baton hour markers are Lumicast, a blend of Super-LumiNova and ceramic that produces solid luminous blocks. These are then overprinted with black onto their tops so that they're perfectly legible in daylight as well as darkness. These batons are paired with a black syringe handset that's also filled with ice-blue Super-LumiNova. The 24-hour scale for use with the short GMT hand is printed inside the batons, and both the GMT hand and scale are a vibrant teal so that they can be picked out at a glance. The last splash of colour is provided by the orange seconds hand, tipped with the Farer A, and matching orange minute markers at the end of each applied baton.
Furthermore, this version of the Palmer now features a re-engineered case that has a screw-down crown and is also a monobloc construction, so that the movement holder is now the main body of the case, rather than a separate piece. These structural changes make the Palmer an even more versatile sports watch than ever before, reinforcing the ethos of adventure and exploration which Farer stands for.
The Palmer Eastern Arabic Edition is a limited edition of only 150 pieces, with just 100 units available in the initial batch.
FEATURES
One Dial, Two Time Zones - The Palmer is equipped with a GMT function, which allows the wearer to track a second time zone.
Night Light - Not only are the hands filled with luminous Super-LumiNova, but the applied batons are moulded from solid blocks of Super-LumiNova. Together, these provide unparalleled legibility in the dark.
Reliable Mechanics - Powering this GMT is the Sellita SW330-2 automatic movement. This dependable calibre beats at a smooth rate of 28,800 bph (4Hz), contains 25 jewels and has a 56-hour power reserve. What’s more, this is the 'Top Grade' version of the SW330, so it’s been adjusted for accuracy in 5 positions.
Universal Case - The case is 39.5mm in diameter, with a 45mm lug-to-lug and a thickness of only 10.8mm, making it easy for anyone to wear.
Hydrophobic - The Palmer is water-resistant to 100m thanks to a screw-down crown and a monobloc construction mid-case which incorporates the movement holder into the main body of the case, rather than as a separate piece.
STORY
The Palmer GMT is named after Edward Henry Palmer (1840-1882), who was an English orientalist and explorer. He expressed an interest in other cultures from a young age and would study Middle Eastern cultures whilst at Cambridge University.
In 1869, he participated in a survey of Sina undertaken by the Palestine Exploration Fund, and the year after that, he explored the desert of El-Tih on foot and unescorted by locals. After this, Palmer returned to England, where he published several reports on his travels, and by 1871, he was married and the Lord Almoner's Professor of Arabic at Cambridge University.
In 1882, Palmer embarked on a journey to the Middle East in order to secure the neutrality of the Arab Sheiks in the ongoing Egyptian conflict known as the Urabi Revolt or the Urabi Revolution. It is whilst engaged in carrying out these negotiations that he and his party were ambushed and killed. His remains were recovered after the war and are now interred in St Paul’s Cathedral.
