WHITE SURF
The Biarritz follows in the footsteps of our best-selling Bernina chronograph, by combining stark whites with bold red accents to create one of the most striking AquaMatics in the collection. The dial is an off-white colour, with a large day/date aperture at three o’clock and a contrasting blue-grey minute track along its outer edge. This is reflected in the AquaMatic’s signature mirrored rehaut, which creates the illusion that the dial extends beyond the edge of the watch. However, the most eye-catching aspect of the Biarritz are the chunky hour markers and handset, both of which are a vivid red, and filled with crisp white Super-LumiNova. The bezel insert of the Biarritz is the only one in the AquaMatic collection to be fashioned from scratch-resistant ceramic. The bright white of this insert perfectly contrasts with the debossed scarlet markings to create a strikingly legible bezel. All of this comes together to make the Biarritz not only an incredibly distinctive statement piece but also an eminently practical dive watch too.
FEATURES
Hard Case - The AquaMatic’s case is fashioned from a solid block of marine-grade 316L stainless steel, a specialist metal that improves the inherent benefits of regular stainless steel by increasing levels of chromium and molybdenum to deliver a toughened steel with exceptional corrosive resistance.
Crystal Clear - The dial is protected by a flat sapphire crystal that sits flush against the case so that its edge cannot be scratched or chipped. Both sides have been applied with a hardened anti-reflective coating to give a clear view whatever the weather.
STORY
The Biarritz AquaMatic takes its name from the city of Biarritz in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The city has existed since medieval times, but today this coastal resort is known as a European surfing hotspot. In fact, Biarritz is where surfing is thought to have been introduced to Europe. In 1957, American film director Peter Viertel and his wife Deborah Kerr were in Biarritz for the film The Sun Also Rises. Whilst there, the couple were visited by a Californian friend who decided to use his surfboard in the waters off Biarritz, and this is thought to be the first time surfing was practised in Europe.
